How Your Diet Can Help You Become A Better Athlete
Happy New Year!
CrossFit SoBro’s Paleo Challenge Month is upon us!
We’ve talked a little bit in the past couple of weeks about why eating healthy and CrossFit complement each other and some recommendations from CrossFit SoBro coaches about popular approaches to changing your diet as 2018 begins, particularly if you’re curious about trying a Paleo diet.
There are a lot of theories and discussions about which diet works best for athletes but ultimately, everyone’s body is different. (Here’s a CrossFit discussion board about how different athletes have responded to the Paleo diet versus Zone, for example.) No matter how you decide to tailor your nutrition to improve performance, there is no question that eating more vegetables and fruits, macro & micronutrients, and the right amount of protein while eliminating processed foods will improve your athletic performance.
The right combination and amount of food for you – what CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman calls precision – can help you optimize your performance in the box. (He gives a great two-part lecture on Nutrition that you can watch here: Part 1 | Part 2 )
“A good diet will increase energy, sense of well being and acumen, while simultaneously flensing fat and packing on muscle,” he’s written. “When properly composed the right diet can nudge every important quantifiable marker for health in the right direction.”
There are a few opportunities coming up to apply these theories at the original Bronx Box this month as we begin our Paleo Challenge in January, and then further refine our eating habits with Zone in February.
- As you adjust your nutrition and diet to reflect the gains you’d like to see, you should think about signing up for the next four-week cycle of our Weightlifting Series, the Iron Barbell Clan, which starts on Monday, January 15th at 8 p.m. The class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Fridays at 7 p.m. for a month. You can sign up here, or speak to Coaches James or Roberto for more details!
- The 2018 Open, the start of the CrossFit Games season and the largest community event of the year, opens for registration on Thursday, January 11th. Hundreds of thousands of athletes participate in this competition each year and there are RX as well as scaled options to allow for as many athletes to participate as possible.
- CrossFit SoBro is collaborating with the Boogie Down Bronx Runners at 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays for workouts tailored for runners.
If you would like assistance with your initial measurements – weight, body fat percentage, waist/hips/arm measurements – as you start the New Year, any of our SoBro coaches or the Front Desk staff will be happy to help! You can even schedule a 15-minute consultation with any of our coaches to talk more depth or get advice about your specific needs.
