May is Paleo Month at CrossFit SoBro, and some of you may already be picking up meals at the box from Kettlebell Kitchen. Maybe you already know a lot about the principles of the Paleo Diet, which is essentially to focus on high-protein, low-carb nutrition. But for those of you who still haven’t made the leap or may be new to Paleo, I wanted to share some resources and background for you to consider.
The Paleo Diet has been around for decades as a lifestyle and weight-loss method. Here’s how TIME magazine describes it:
The theory behind the diet is simple: our hunter-gatherer forebears, who survived on meat and fish that was not saturated with growth-stimulating antibiotics or hormones, as well as on fresh fruits and vegetables, were on the right track until the Agricultural Revolution introduced toxins into the food chain some 10,000 years ago. So the goal is for citizens of the 21st Century to lean back—way back—and eat the way primitive people did in the Paleolithic Era, circa two million years ago.
The Paleo Diet broadly includes fresh vegetables and some fruit along with lean cuts of meat. Most versions of the diet, like Whole 30 or the Zone Diet, require restrictions on dairy, beans and carbs (sugar, bread, rice, etc.) While not every nutritionist agrees with some of the restrictions, Paleo is a huge part of the CrossFit culture around the world. Athletes who have blended Paleo with their CrossFit lifestyle say that they have noticed a positive impact on their weight-loss goals and on improving their workouts. Here’s a good list of blogs and resources to get you started if you want to learn more about how to start experimenting with Paleo.
